Hundreds of women and activists marched through the streets of Nairobi on Thursday to call for improved reproductive healthcare services and changes to abortion laws in Kenya.
The protesters who were dressed in green outfits, carried placards with messages such as “My Body My Choice” and “Abortion is Healthcare” as they walked through the city centre. Some also held banners calling on leaders to protect women’s reproductive rights.
The demonstration attracted attention from members of the public as the group moved through busy streets while chanting and waving signs. Several people stopped to watch while others recorded videos and shared them online.
Activists taking part in the march said many women continue to face challenges accessing safe reproductive healthcare services.
According to some of the protesters, restrictions on abortion have forced some women to seek unsafe alternatives that may put their health at risk.
Under Kenyan law, abortion is only permitted in special cases where the life or health of the mother is in danger. However, campaigners want the government to review the law and expand access to safe medical care for women.
One protester carried a placard describing abortion as a human rights issue, while others urged leaders to listen to women’s concerns. The green clothing worn by many participants symbolised unity during the march.
The protest also sparked debate online after photos and videos circulated on social media. While some Kenyans supported the calls for better healthcare access, others expressed opposition due to religious and cultural beliefs.
Abortion remains a sensitive topic in Kenya with different groups holding strong opinions on the matter. Despite the differing views, the demonstrators maintained that their goal was to push for safer healthcare services and greater awareness about women’s health issues.
The march ended peacefully in the city centre as activists continued to call for dialogue and policy changes regarding reproductive healthcare in the country.
