Former Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia has declared former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the undisputed political kingpin of the Mt Kenya region, reigniting debate over leadership and influence in Central Kenya politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a local television interview, Kururia argued that Uhuru still holds the mantle of leadership because it was bestowed upon him by respected Kikuyu elders and influential leaders, including the late John Michuki. According to the MP, Uhuru has never formally handed over that position to another leader.
Kururia dismissed current attempts by other politicians to crown themselves as Mt Kenya kingpins, saying such efforts amount to self-imposed leadership without the community’s blessing.
He also criticised the 2021 endorsement of Justin Muturi by some elders, describing it as meaningless and poorly organised.
His remarks come amid increasing political activity by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has been positioning himself as the region’s political spokesman.
Gachagua has repeatedly urged Mt Kenya residents to rally behind him as he prepares to influence voting patterns in the 2027 elections.
Despite previously having strained relations, Uhuru and Gachagua have recently shown signs of reconciliation following a meeting at the funeral of former politician Daniel Karaba.
Analysts believe a political alliance between the two leaders could significantly reshape Kenya’s political landscape.
Political analyst Peter Kagwanja recently described Uhuru as the “Muthamaki” — a supreme community leader — while referring to Gachagua as “Mutongoria,” a leader responsible for implementing the community’s agenda.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has also backed Uhuru, calling him the uncontested political leader of the Mt Kenya region.
