Popular MP Confirmed Dead after a Failed Surgery in a Private Hospital

The Ugandan political scene has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Kalangala Woman Member of Parliament, Helen Nakimuli, who passed away at the age of 41 after an unsuccessful surgical procedure.

According to a statement released by her party, the National Unity Platform, Nakimuli died on Sunday, April 19, at a private medical facility in Kampala after complications arose during surgery.

Reports indicate that the operation initially appeared successful, but doctors were unable to revive her afterward despite prolonged efforts.

Her personal assistant revealed that Nakimuli was taken into theatre around midday, and after several hours, doctors informed those present that although the procedure had gone well, her condition had suddenly deteriorated.

Medical staff reportedly attempted to resuscitate her for over an hour without success.

The Parliament of Uganda confirmed her death in an official communication, expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to her family, constituents, and the nation at large.

Leaders across the political divide described her passing as both shocking and devastating.

Bobi Wine, leader of the National Unity Platform, mourned Nakimuli as a dedicated and courageous leader, terming her death a “terrible and shocking loss.”

Other legislators, including Anita Annet Among and Mathias Mpuuga, paid tribute to her commitment to public service and her passion for uplifting marginalized communities.

Nakimuli, who first entered Parliament after the 2021 general elections and was re-elected earlier this year, was widely recognized for championing healthcare access, education, and empowerment initiatives for women and youth in Kalangala.

Her death leaves a significant gap in Uganda’s opposition politics and among the communities she served, with burial arrangements expected to be announced in due course.
