A businesswoman in Kisumu is recovering from serious injuries after she was attacked with acid by suspected motorcycle riders while heading home from work in the Nyalenda area.
The incident has heightened concern over a recent rise in violent assaults across the country.
The victim, identified as Mercy Awuor, sustained severe burns to her face, chest, and mouth during the evening attack, which occurred at around 7 pm.
She is currently undergoing treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where medical teams are monitoring her condition.
In her account to the media, Awuor explained that she was close to her home when individuals riding a motorcycle approached and poured a liquid on her.
She initially believed it was water but soon experienced intense pain as the substance began to burn her skin.
She stated that she screamed for help and moved back towards nearby people, who responded by pouring water on her in an effort to reduce the damage.
Awuor, who runs a local restaurant, reported that the injuries have significantly affected her ability to eat, noting that her mouth was badly damaged.
She also expressed concern that she may have swallowed some of the substance while calling for help.
The mother has appealed for justice and urged authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly.
She indicated that she suspects the involvement of a person known to her, saying the individual was once a close friend.
The case has been formally reported at Kasagam Police Station, where investigations are expected to continue.
The attack comes just days after another widely reported acid assault involving a church choir singer, adding to growing fears about public safety.
Many Kenyans have condemned the incident and called on law enforcement agencies to take stronger action to address the increasing number of such attacks.
Authorities have yet to provide detailed updates, but public pressure is mounting for swift investigations and accountability as the victim continues her recovery.
