Former IEBC commissioner Roselyn Akombe has stirred debate in Kenya after directing a sharp question at William Ruto on social media, a comment that quickly gained traction online.
In a post shared on March 16, 2026, Akombe wrote:
“So, tell me please, if you destroy/buy everything, how are you going to run this country?”
The remark, which drew tens of thousands of views and many reposts, was widely interpreted as criticism of what some observers claim are attempts to influence or take control of key institutions, media houses, and economic entities under the current administration.
Akombe, who previously served as a commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, resigned in 2017 during the tense election period citing concerns about the integrity of the process.
Since leaving the commission, she has periodically spoken out on governance and institutional independence.
Her latest comment comes amid public debate in Kenya over issues such as alleged interference in private organizations, changes in media ownership, and broader concerns about the concentration of political and economic influence.
Critics of the government argue that such developments could weaken institutional independence and public trust.
Supporters of the administration, however, often dismiss such claims as political rhetoric or opposition narratives meant to undermine the government.
Regardless of interpretation, Akombe’s statement has added fuel to an already heated political climate. Her question reflects broader concerns being discussed by sections of the public about accountability, governance, and the preservation of independent institutions.
With Kenya’s political atmosphere intensifying ahead of future electoral contests, voices like Akombe’s continue to shape the national conversation about leadership, transparency, and the long-term stability of the country’s political landscape.
