Instances of people losing significant amounts of money after withdrawing from banks have been increasing across many regions of the Republic of Kenya.
In the latest case, a manager in Mombasa lost over Sh600,000 when thieves broke into his car near a mosque.
Authorities in Mombasa are investigating the incident, which occurred on March 16, 2026.
Reports indicate that the manager had withdrawn Sh646,120 from Standard Chartered Bank at Treasury Square at around 1:00 p.m.
Police processed the crime scene and recovered seven spent cartridges, a bullet core and a fragment, all preserved as exhibits.
Security teams have since intensified patrols in the area, combing nearby villages and trading centers in pursuit of the suspects.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities calling on the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the gunmen.
This robbery is part of a worrying trend of increasing attacks targeting M-Pesa outlets in the region. Police officials note that such crimes have been on the rise despite ongoing efforts to curb them. Special response teams have been deployed to strengthen security and deter further incidents.
