Analyst Drops Matiang’i Preference & Opens Door to Another Leader for Presidency in 2027 Race

Lawyer Wahome Thuku has stirred political debate after expressing support for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's potential presidential bid in the 2027 General Election.

His remarks have drawn attention because they appear to mark a notable shift from his earlier public position, where he had backed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as the most suitable candidate to become Kenya’s sixth president.

Speaking on the evolving political landscape, Thuku said he would not object to Gachagua ascending to the country’s highest office.

He argued that Nyeri County producing another president would be a significant moment for the region and could be viewed positively by many residents.

However, Thuku also maintained that Gachagua faces a major political challenge.

According to him, a section of the former deputy president’s own supporters remains unconvinced about a presidential run and would prefer him to play a different role in the country’s political future.

He suggested that winning over hesitant allies could be just as important as attracting new supporters from outside his traditional base.

The lawyer’s latest remarks are likely to fuel fresh discussions within opposition circles, where conversations around a united presidential candidate continue to dominate political strategy ahead of 2027.

With alliances shifting and new political calculations emerging, Thuku’s apparent change of position highlights the fluid nature of Kenya’s race to succeed President William Ruto at the next General Election.
