Residents of Elburgon in Njoro, Nakuru County, are struggling to come to terms with the shocking killing of a respected church leader and his wife whose bodies were discovered inside a well within their compound.
The victims were identified as Pastor Pius Machogu, 72, a retired accountant and Seventh Day Adventist preacher, and his wife, Jerusha Kywamboka Machogu, 70.
Police say the main suspect is their farmhand, Sisa Juma Wanyama, who was arrested shortly after the incident.
Molo Sub County Police Commander Timon Odingo confirmed that detectives have launched investigations into the murders.
He said the suspect admitted to killing the couple before dumping their bodies in a well at the homestead.
Odingo also revealed that the couple’s housegirl, identified only as Maureen, is still missing.
He said officers are actively searching for her and that she is currently being treated as a missing person until she is found.
Family members have shared disturbing claims about events that may have led to the killings.
They alleged that the suspect had been involved in a secret relationship with the housegirl while working at the home.
The couple’s son, Chris Ayienda, said his father became suspicious after the girl suddenly disappeared from the compound.
He explained that his father had asked the suspect about the girl’s whereabouts after she went missing, but the suspect allegedly turned on him and struck him with an axe.
Ayienda also said the suspect was later found with the missing girl’s mobile phone despite claiming that she had travelled to her rural home.
The couple’s disappearance had already raised concern among neighbours who knew them as active church members.
When repeated phone calls went unanswered, residents entered the compound and found the farmhand inside while the couple was missing.
Police later recovered the bodies from the well as investigations continue.
Residents are now urging authorities to move quickly to establish the fate of the missing housegirl and uncover the full truth behind the tragic deaths.
