Nairobi, Kenya — The number of people confirmed dead in a tragic incident in the Grogan area of Nairobi has risen to 23, police confirmed on Saturday, after additional bodies were discovered during an ongoing search operation.
Authorities had earlier reported that 10 people had died in the incident. However, as investigators and rescue teams continued combing through the area, more victims were found, significantly increasing the death toll.
According to police officials, the newly discovered bodies were located in different parts of the Grogan industrial district during a coordinated search involving local officers, emergency responders, and forensic teams.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.
“We initially confirmed 10 fatalities, but as our teams expanded the search, additional bodies were recovered, bringing the total number to 23,” a senior police officer involved in the operation said. “Investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of death and identify all the victims.”
Police have secured sections of the Grogan area as forensic experts examine the scene. Officers are also working to determine whether the victims died at the same time and under similar circumstances.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue. Families with missing relatives have been asked to contact nearby police stations or hospitals for assistance with identification.
The discovery has shocked residents and workers in the busy industrial zone, which is known for its hardware shops, warehouses, and transport activity.
Government officials are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses. Police say updates will be provided once post-mortem examinations and forensic analysis are completed.
