Exposed: Inside the Will of a Kenyan Ex-MP Who Disowned 4 Wives and Left His Wealth to a ‘Househelp’

A long-running court battle over the estate of former Kenyan legislator Fred Kubai has once again drawn public attention after details emerged that he left a large portion of his wealth to his longtime househelp.

Kubai, who served as a Member of Parliament and was also a prominent trade unionist in Kenya’s early post-independence years, reportedly left property and assets valued at more than KSh 50 million to a woman who had worked in his household for many years.

The decision sparked controversy among relatives and other interested parties, eventually leading to a protracted legal dispute over the legitimacy of the will.

According to court documents previously filed in the succession case, Kubai’s will named the househelp as the main beneficiary of several valuable properties.

Some family members challenged the decision, arguing that the estate should have been shared among relatives instead.

The dispute ended up before the High Court, where judges were tasked with determining whether the will reflected Kubai’s genuine intentions before his death.

During the hearings, evidence was presented showing that the househelp had taken care of the former MP for a long time and remained close to him until his final days.

The court ultimately upheld the validity of the will, affirming that individuals have the legal right to distribute their property to anyone they choose, provided the process follows the law.

Legal experts say the case continues to be cited in discussions around succession laws in Kenya, especially regarding the rights of individuals to allocate their wealth outside traditional family structures.

The story has resurfaced in public conversations today as Kenyans debate inheritance rights and the importance of writing clear wills to avoid family conflicts.

Lawyers often advise individuals to properly document their wishes and involve legal professionals when drafting wills to prevent disputes that can take years to resolve in court.

The Kubai case remains one of the most talked-about inheritance disputes in the country’s legal history.
