"You Nearly Killed My Son," MP Nyikal Blasts Senator Ojienda For Attending Burial With Goons

Seme Member of Parliament James Nyikal has accused Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda of failing to control a group of rowdy supporters during his father’s funeral, an incident he says nearly turned tragic.

Speaking on Saturday, Nyikal recounted how tensions escalated rapidly during the burial ceremony, disrupting what was meant to be a solemn occasion.

According to the legislator, the situation became alarming when his son was caught up in the confrontation, raising fears for his safety.

Nyikal revealed that he personally approached Senator Ojienda during the incident and urged him to restrain the individuals believed to have accompanied him.

However, he suggested that the intervention did little to immediately calm the situation, as the group continued to cause unrest among mourners.

The MP questioned the growing trend of politicians attending public events with large groups of supporters, arguing that such displays can intimidate ordinary citizens and undermine the purpose of community gatherings.

He maintained that genuine leaders should be able to interact freely with the public without relying on numbers or force.

He further expressed frustration over what he described as a dangerous disruption, warning that the chaos not only disrespected the deceased but also put lives at risk.

Nyikal emphasized that funerals should remain peaceful, free from political tension and unnecessary shows of power.

In his remarks, he also criticized what he termed a rising culture of mobilized or hired crowds in politics, cautioning that it erodes authentic public support and replaces it with fear-driven loyalty. According to him, such practices threaten democratic values and social harmony.

The incident adds to a series of recent confrontations linked to political intolerance in different parts of the country. Notably, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka recently reported a hostile encounter in Siaya County, where he claimed a group blocked him from accessing a hotel over alleged political differences.

Onyonka linked the experience to broader tensions in the political environment, warning that intolerance is becoming increasingly entrenched.

He stressed that democracy should allow leaders and citizens to hold differing views without fear of harassment or exclusion.

Despite the rising tensions, the leaders involved have reiterated their commitment to continued public engagement.

However, the incidents have underscored growing concerns about the need for restraint, mutual respect, and civility in political spaces across the country.
