Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has addressed the type of political statements that will be tolerated during the burial ceremony of his late mother, Teresia Nyaboke Onyonka, who passed away at the age of 81 while receiving treatment at Aga Khan University Hospital.
Speaking while welcoming mourners, friends, and political leaders to his home, the senator emphasized that the funeral should remain peaceful and dignified rather than turning into a platform for political battles.
He revealed that only Babu Owino and Edwin Sifuna would be permitted to use the popular “Wantam” slogan during the burial ceremony scheduled to take place in Mosocho, Kisii.
According to Onyonka, the family’s priority is to honor the life of their mother and allow relatives and close friends enough time to mourn without unnecessary political confrontations.
He stated that funerals should not be transformed into campaign grounds where leaders exchange attacks or engage in political showmanship.
The senator urged all guests expected to attend the burial to maintain respect and discipline throughout the ceremony.
Among the leaders who attended the condolence gathering was Simba Arati, the Governor of Kisii County. Arati listened attentively as Onyonka spoke to mourners and political allies.
Despite the long-standing political rivalry between the two leaders, the atmosphere during the meeting remained calm and respectful, with both appearing focused on comforting the bereaved family.
The relationship between Onyonka and Arati has for years attracted public attention within the Gusii political landscape.
Although both leaders are associated with Orange Democratic Movement politics, they have often differed on regional political matters.
Their rivalry has continued to shape political discussions in Kisii County, especially as speculation grows about the 2027 General Election.
There have been increasing claims from political observers and supporters that Onyonka could contest the Kisii gubernatorial seat against Arati in 2027.
These reports have heightened political tension between supporters of the two camps, with many closely monitoring the evolving political dynamics in the region.
However, during the mourning period, leaders present appeared united in showing sympathy and solidarity with the Onyonka family.
