The primary suspect in a high-profile homicide case that occurred in Nairobi's Mathare area has been apprehended by law enforcement officers following an extensive search.
The arrest marks a major breakthrough in an investigation that began over a year ago.
The individual, identified by authorities as the prime suspect, is accused of fatally stabbing Michael Omworo Ombui in January 2025.
The attack took place in the Mathare 4A settlement while Ombui was walking his young son, popularly known as Baby James, to school.
The incident left the child orphaned and highly traumatized, drawing significant public attention across the country.
According to a statement issued by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who legally adopted the child following the tragedy, the suspect was tracked down and arrested in Migori County, where he had been in hiding.
Sonko recounted the details of the fateful day, stating that the suspect allegedly went ahead and kicked away the lunchbox containing ugali and omena meant for Baby James after committing the crime. This act of cruelty, he noted, prompted his close monitoring of the judicial process.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers based in Ruaraka successfully coordinated the operation to secure the suspect after 17 months on the run.
Police reports confirm that four other individuals linked to the incident are already in custody as law enforcement officers continue to finalize the case files.
The suspect is currently being held by police awaiting formal arraignment in court to face murder charges.
Authorities have assured the public that due legal process will be followed to ensure justice is fully served for the deceased and his family.
