The disappearance and tragic death of a student from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology has left the university community and residents of Siaya County in deep mourning.
Alice Riang’a, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Education in Science (Mathematics and Chemistry), was found dead days after she was reported missing.
Her body was reportedly discovered in a forest in the Barkowino area of Bondo, bringing a painful end to an intense search conducted by her family, friends, and fellow students.
According to reports, Alice had been missing for nearly four days before her body was found. Concern grew after her phone went off and all efforts to reach her proved unsuccessful.
Family members and friends had appealed to the public for information, hoping she would be found safe.
The heartbreaking discovery has sparked grief and outrage among students at JOOUST, many of whom took to the streets in peaceful demonstrations demanding justice and enhanced security for students.
The protests reflected growing concern over the increasing number of cases involving missing and murdered young women across the country.
In a statement issued through the university’s Director of Student Support Services, Mary Onditi, the institution confirmed that a suspect linked to the killing had already been arrested and was assisting police with investigations.
“The Regional Police Commander informed the university that the suspect has been apprehended and is currently in police custody as investigations continue,” part of the statement read.
Police also conveyed their condolences to the student’s family and the university fraternity, assuring the public that investigations were ongoing and that every effort would be made to establish the full circumstances surrounding Alice’s death.
The incident has triggered emotional reactions online, with many Kenyans calling for justice and urging young people to remain cautious in relationships and social interactions.
Alice’s death comes barely days after another student, Benter Apondi of RIAT College in Kisumu, was also found murdered after going missing, further intensifying public concern over the safety of young women in the country.
