Woman Dies After Her Vehicle Plunges Into a Swollen River While Heading Home

A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a woman after a vehicle she was travelling in veered off a bridge and plunged into the swollen Ndarugu River at the border of Gatundu North and Gatundu South in Kiambu County.

Authorities confirmed that two women were inside the car at the time of the incident. One of them died instantly at the scene, while the second survivor was rescued and rushed to hospital with injuries. Her current condition has not yet been disclosed.

Police officers who responded to the crash retrieved the body of the deceased and transported it to a nearby mortuary as investigations into the cause of the accident began.

Officials have also appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident to come forward with any information that could assist in establishing what happened.

Preliminary findings suggest that the river had swollen significantly following heavy rainfall in the area. Authorities believe the rising water levels may have contributed to the accident by making the bridge crossing more dangerous than usual.

The stretch of road where the incident occurred is known among residents to be vulnerable during the rainy season. Locals say flooding often affects visibility and road stability, making it difficult for motorists to safely navigate the crossing.

Community members have also raised long-standing concerns about the condition of the bridge, describing it as narrow and lacking adequate safety features such as guardrails.

According to residents, the structure has witnessed several accidents in the past, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and rising water levels.

Drivers in the area reportedly struggle to maintain control when crossing, especially when the river is swollen, increasing the risk of vehicles veering off the bridge.

Following the latest incident, residents are now calling on local leaders and relevant authorities to urgently address the safety concerns by upgrading the bridge infrastructure.

They are advocating for the installation of protective barriers, clearer road signage, and other safety measures to reduce future accidents.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the bridge and plunging into the river.
