Omondi grew up tough. Raised mainly by a single mother after being born in Migori, he later moved to Nairobi’s Eastlands Dandora and Mbotela areas.
In a phone interview with Mpasho journalist Gabriel Sironka, Omondi described himself as someone who was born hard and strong. He said his life experiences taught him endurance from an early age.
“I was born hard and strong.”
He added that he can go an entire day without food, something he links to the difficult conditions he grew up in.
He completed primary school and attended Makongeni Secondary School (KCSE in 2020). He has openly talked about his mother’s sacrifices and how he wants to give back even promising to build her a bungalow if he wins big fights.
Before boxing fame, he worked as a security guard earning about KSh 10,000 per month to support his single mother he's the eldest child and feels responsible for the family.
His nickname “Mbavu Destroyer” Rib Destroyer comes from his fighting mantra of targeting ribs to “leave a rib broken.” The “Weka Mawe” Put Stones and “The Stone” monikers stem from his mother's words to him: “You are a stone,” which he embraced as a symbol of resilience.
Mbavu recently stated his main goal is to win the prize money to build a bungalow for his mother. "He has changed my life even that dream my mum had of buidling a house has been fulfilled.
I am struggling for my mum. You can't get a mother twice. Let mum smile. I can still grind but her years are way past that."
The peak of his visibility came with the highly anticipated boxing match against Majembe real name Portifas Odipo, from Kisumu on April 4, 2026, at Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi.
Promoted by comedian Oga Obinna as "Vurugu" (Chaos), it was one of the biggest Kenyan amateur boxing events in recent memory.
It sold out the arena first Kenyan vs Kenyan boxing match to do so generating over KSh 8 million in ticket sales alone.
Build-up featured heated weigh-in face-offs, viral TikTok beef, celebrity involvement (including prayers and KSh 50,000 from Pastor Kanyari for Mbavu), and massive online hype.
