At least 18 people have been reported dead after a matatu they were travelling in burst into flames in Zimbabwe.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Thursday, April 16, along the Bulawayo–Esigodini Road in the southern part of the country.
The vehicle, described as a Toyota Quantum taxi, is said to have exploded before catching fire, killing all those on board.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle may have been carrying explosive materials, although authorities have cautioned that inquiries are still ongoing to establish the exact cause of the blast.
Images shared online showed the vehicle completely destroyed, reduced to a charred shell following the intense fire.
Following the incident, President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a State of Disaster, as the country mourns the loss of 18 lives in the devastating accident.
Authorities, including police and military personnel, have since secured the scene and launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
A temporary one-kilometre diversion has been created to allow traffic flow as forensic teams continue examining the area.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the region, with calls for thorough investigations to determine the cause of the explosion.
