A 97-year-old businessman has died after being caught in a stampede following a political rally addressed by President William Ruto at Egetuki Centre, Kisii County.
Mzee Ombui Orandi, a resident of Biyonge village, had walked about three kilometres to the venue on the morning of April 15, 2026, as part of his daily routine.
His son, Francis Nyabuto Ombui, said the elderly man was eager to attend because the President was scheduled to visit.
After President Ruto concluded his address, commissioning the KMTC Gucha campus, launching road construction, and inspecting a market project.
Witnesses said residents remained behind following reports that the area Member of Parliament would distribute cash. A rush toward the KMTC gate triggered a crowd surge.
Orandi, who had a hearing impairment, could not react quickly as people pushed forward. He fell and was trampled. He was taken to Ogembo Hospital but attempts to revive him failed. His body is at Ogembo mortuary.
The family has appealed for financial support for funeral arrangements. The incident has been reported at Ogembo Police Station, where investigations are underway.
Area MP Alpha Miruka expressed sympathy to the family, noting the incident occurred away from where he was distributing money. Several others were injured during the chaos, though the exact number remains unclear.
