A major police investigation has been launched in Migori County after a lorry carrying bhang worth an estimated KSh 34.1 million lost control and plunged into River Kuja.
The shocking incident happened early in the morning, drawing large crowds of residents and security officers to the scene.
According to reports, the lorry was travelling along a road near the river when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Witnesses said the truck was moving at a high speed before it swerved off the road and crashed into the river.
The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed, but police suspect the driver may have been trying to avoid a roadblock or lost control due to the condition of the road.
After the crash, officers who rushed to the area discovered that the lorry was loaded with sacks containing bhang. Authorities later confirmed that the illegal drugs were worth approximately KSh 34.1 million.
The discovery turned what first appeared to be a normal road accident into a major anti-drug operation.
Residents gathered near the river as police and emergency teams worked to recover the vehicle and secure the cargo. Some people were seen trying to move closer to the scene, but officers kept them away as investigations continued. Police said the drugs would be taken as evidence before being destroyed according to the law.
The driver and any passengers who may have been inside the lorry during the crash were not immediately found. Search efforts were launched along the riverbanks and surrounding areas. Investigators are also trying to establish where the consignment came from and where it was being taken.
Migori County has in recent years been named among areas used by traffickers to transport illegal goods through border routes and remote roads. Security agencies say they are increasing surveillance to stop such activities.
Police have urged members of the public to share any information that may help identify those behind the shipment. They also warned transporters against being used by criminal networks.
No deaths had been confirmed by the time of this report, but authorities said more updates would be given once investigations and recovery operations are complete.
