Kisumu: Police Fire Teargas to Break Up Clashing Groups

Police in Kisumu have fired tear gas to disperse rival groups of youths clashing in parts of the city as tensions rise ahead of the planned Linda Mwananchi rally.

The confrontations were reported in Kachok and along Ring Road in Nyalenda, where supporters and opponents of the movement engaged in running battles.

Security officers moved in to restore order as the situation threatened to escalate into wider unrest.

The disturbances come amid heightened political activity linked to the anticipated rally associated with the Orange Democratic Movement.

Several neighbourhoods, including Kondele, Kibos, Carwash, and Nyalenda, had already shown signs of unrest earlier in the day, with groups of youths mobilising and moving through the streets on motorcycles.

At the proposed rally venue, KaOwuor Grounds in Kibos, supporters had gathered early, some carrying crude weapons and insisting the event would proceed despite opposition.

Rival groups were also reported to be assembling in nearby areas, raising fears of further clashes.

A heavy police presence was deployed across key locations, including near Kondele Police Station and other identified hotspots, as authorities sought to prevent the violence from spreading.

Despite the tensions, most businesses in the town centre remained open, although movement was cautious in affected areas.

Kisumu Governor James Orengo urged calm and warned against attempts to disrupt the gathering, stating that authorities were aware of alleged plans to interfere with the rally.

He called on residents to avoid violence as political activities continue.

Other leaders allied to the movement, including Edwin Sifuna, Godfrey Osotsi, and Babu Owino, were expected to attend events in the city before proceeding to the rally.

The situation remains tense, with security agencies maintaining heightened vigilance to contain any further clashes as political rivalry continues to play out on the streets of Kisumu.
