On the night of January 15, 2025, 30-year-old Winnie Akusuha was at her parents’ home, where she had recently sought refuge after leaving her troubled marriage in Nairobi. She had returned with her three young children, hoping to rebuild her life in a safer environment.
According to reports, her estranged husband, Hannise Simani Juma, traveled from Nairobi to Nandi under the pretense of delivering documents for the children. What appeared to be a routine visit quickly turned into a horrifying ordeal.
While Winnie prepared supper in the kitchen, Hannise allegedly attacked her with a knife, inflicting multiple injuries.
Her screams drew the attention of family members, who rushed to the scene only to find her critically wounded. The incident unfolded in the presence of the couple’s children, who witnessed the violence.
Moments later, Hannise reportedly turned the weapon on himself. Authorities later recovered items suggesting prior planning, including a written note and a bottle believed to have contained poison.
Both individuals were rushed to Jumuia Friends Kaimosi Hospital, where Winnie was pronounced dead on arrival. Hannise succumbed shortly after.
Police have since described the incident as a suspected murder-suicide, noting indications that the act may have been premeditated. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the घटना are ongoing.
