Detectives have arrested a key suspect believed to have financed and orchestrated the brutal killing of a pastor and his wife in Rongai Sub County, marking a major breakthrough in a case that has deeply unsettled residents.
Nakuru County Criminal Investigations Officer Samuel Ngeiywo confirmed that the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday evening within Rongai.
Investigators believe he played a central role in hiring individuals to carry out the murders, allegedly over a long-standing land dispute.
The arrest follows the earlier detention of three suspects who reportedly confessed to executing the killings for payment. According to investigators, the trio claimed they were paid Sh1 million to carry out the attack.
The suspect was presented before the Molo Law Courts on Wednesday, where detectives sought additional time to complete investigations and consolidate evidence against all parties involved.
However, his lawyer informed the court that he required medical attention. The court subsequently released him on a cash bail of Sh50,000, ordering him to report daily to Salgaa Police Station as investigations continue.
Authorities have withheld the suspect’s identity, noting that he has not yet been formally charged. The court is expected to issue further directions as the case progresses.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect was a neighbour of the late Joseph Ndegwa Kihiti, aged 90. It is alleged that he had sold Kihiti a parcel of land but later resold the same property to another buyer before ownership documents were finalised.
Detectives suspect that fear of exposure, particularly as Kihiti reportedly planned to sell the disputed land, may have motivated the alleged plot.
Investigators also believe the suspect attempted to conceal his involvement by appearing at the crime scene and publicly presenting himself as a friend of the deceased.
The victims—Pastor Kihiti and his wife, Rose Wanjiku, aged 63—were found murdered in their home at Muthera Farm. Postmortem results revealed that both sustained severe head injuries, with evidence suggesting they struggled to defend themselves during the attack.
The three earlier suspects remain in custody after the court granted detectives 30 days to conclude investigations. Authorities say all suspects are expected to be charged jointly once inquiries are complete.
