A 28-year-old woman in western Uganda has been left in a difficult situation after her husband reportedly abandoned her when he discovered she had given birth to triplets.
The mother is currently stranded at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where nurses are trying to help her and her newborn babies.
The woman, identified as Obvious Atuhaire, is a resident of Mbarara. She delivered three babies—two girls and one boy—on February 3 at the hospital.
According to medical staff, the babies were born prematurely at 35 weeks, which means they require extra care and monitoring before they can be discharged.
However, what should have been a joyful moment for the family quickly turned into a painful experience for the young mother.
Reports indicate that her husband, Moses Tukwatanise, left her after learning during an antenatal check-up that she was expecting triplets.
Sources say he was shocked by the news and soon disappeared, leaving Atuhaire to face the situation alone.
Since then, the mother has remained at the hospital without support from her husband or close family members.
Nurses at the facility say she has been struggling to cope with the emotional and financial burden of caring for three newborn babies.
Atuhaire works as a peasant farmer and lives in Nyakayojo, an area within Mbarara where she rents a small single room.
Her income is limited, and she had only saved about UGX 100,000 before going to the hospital to give birth.
Unfortunately, the little money she had saved has already been used up during her stay at the hospital.
She said the funds were spent on food, medication, and other basic needs for both herself and the babies while they remain admitted.
Hospital workers say the premature birth of the triplets has made the situation even more challenging.
Premature babies often need special medical attention to help them grow and stay healthy.
As a result, the newborns have had to remain under the close supervision of doctors and nurses.
