UoN Students Trapped On Beds As Floodwaters Invade Hostels During Night Of Relentless Nairobi Rains

Heavy rains that pounded Nairobi on Saturday night left students at the University of Nairobi struggling as floodwaters rushed into several hostels.

Videos shared online showed water flowing through corridors and seeping into rooms while frightened learners tried to save their belongings.

Some students climbed onto their beds as water spread across the floors. Others carefully moved through the flooded hallways while carrying bags and electronics in an effort to protect them from the rising water.

The rainfall lasted for hours and overwhelmed drainage systems around the university area. Water pushed through entrances and passages inside the hostels which quickly turned quiet buildings into pools of muddy water.

In several videos students could be heard shouting warnings to each other. Some used their phones to record the moment as the water crept higher inside the rooms. Mattresses clothes books and electronics were seen soaking in the flood.

A few learners attempted to block water from entering their rooms using towels and buckets. Others helped friends move valuables to higher places such as wardrobes or desks. Despite the confusion most students remained calm and tried to help each other.

The hostel flooding happened as large parts of Nairobi faced serious flooding due to intense rainfall on Saturday evening. Roads in different estates were submerged and transport was disrupted for many hours.

Authorities later confirmed that emergency teams had been deployed to respond to the situation in several affected areas. Rescue workers also assisted people who were stranded by the fast rising water in parts of the city.

President William Ruto said the government had activated a multi agency response to deal with the floods. Emergency services security agencies and humanitarian teams were sent to help residents and clear blocked drainage systems.

The government also began working with county officials to ensure safety for communities in areas hit by flooding. Food supplies medical help and other support were delivered to families who had been affected by the disaster.

Reports indicated that many neighborhoods experienced serious flooding during the storm. Areas such as Parklands the Central Business District Ngong Road Kibera Kilimani South B Kawangware Langata Lavington Eastleigh and Riruta were among those affected.

Traffic was also heavily disrupted as several roads became difficult to use. Floodwater covered sections of the Nairobi Expressway near the Museum Hill exit as well as Limuru Road Bunyala Road Lusaka Road and parts of the city centre.

Officials also warned that the Nairobi River and Ngong River had overflowed after the intense rainfall. The rising river levels increased the risk of flooding in nearby settlements.

Authorities urged residents to stay alert and follow safety advice from weather experts and security officers as the heavy rains continue across many parts of the country.
