Tensions flared on Sunday after violent clashes broke out between rival communities along the Muhoroni border between Kisumu County and Kericho County, leaving several people injured and raising fears of fatalities.
The confrontation, which reportedly stemmed from a long-standing land boundary dispute, escalated rapidly as members of the opposing groups attacked each other using crude weapons during a disagreement over grazing land.
According to Muhoroni OCPD Frederick Ombaka, at least three individuals sustained arrow injuries during the clashes, while another person was reported missing at the height of the violence.
Witnesses said the situation quickly spiralled out of control, with angry residents setting vehicles on fire and destroying property as tensions intensified. Several vehicles were torched during the chaos.
Residents also blocked the busy Muhoroni–Londiani junction road for several hours on Sunday afternoon. Protesters burned sections of nearby sugarcane plantations and a tractor belonging to a local sugar company.
Motorists travelling through the area were advised to avoid the affected route and instead use the longer Londiani–Kericho–Kisumu route via Mau Summit, Chepsir and Kericho town.
Authorities later confirmed that one body had been discovered after the clashes. The victim’s remains were reportedly found severely burnt.
Border conflicts in the region have been reported for many years, often driven by disagreements over the exact location of the approximately 103-kilometre boundary separating the two counties. Some residents claim historical ownership of sections of the contested
In addition to land disputes, incidents such as cattle rustling and competition over fertile farmland and sugar factory estates have frequently triggered violence and displacement in the region.
In March 2025, governors Anyang’ Nyong’o of Kisumu and Eric Mutai declared that the long-running border conflicts had largely been resolved following mediation efforts supported by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission.
However, similar clashes have continued to erupt occasionally, particularly in nearby areas such as Sondu, where cattle rustling and boundary disagreements have previously resulted in injuries, deaths and displacement.
Security officers have since been deployed to the Muhoroni border to restore calm as investigations into the incident occurred.
