The murder trial over the killing of Kasipul MP took a dramatic turn when Assistant Commissioner of Police appeared before the court and revealed that a vehicle he once lent out ended up being used to trail the legislator on the very day the lawmaker was shot dead in .
Testifying during the ongoing proceedings, Haikal told the court that the car had been borrowed by a suspect now linked to the fatal shooting.
According to the officer, investigators later established that the same vehicle was seen trailing the late MP shortly before gunmen opened fire in what prosecutors believe was a carefully planned assassination.
The revelation stunned the courtroom, as lawyers from both sides pressed the senior police officer to explain how the vehicle moved from a routine loan to becoming a crucial piece of evidence in one of Kenya’s most closely watched murder trials.
Haikal maintained that he had no knowledge of any criminal mission when he allowed the suspect to use the car, insisting that the request appeared ordinary at the time.
However, prosecutors argue that tracking data, witness accounts and surveillance footage have placed the vehicle near key locations linked to the movements of Ong’ondo Were shortly before the deadly attack.
The prosecution says the car allegedly helped suspects monitor the MP’s route moments before the fatal ambush, strengthening claims that the killing was premeditated.
Defence lawyers, however, questioned whether the officer could have unknowingly facilitated the surveillance, hinting at possible gaps in the investigation.
As the trial continues, the testimony by Assistant Commissioner Haikal has added a new layer of intrigue to the high profile case.
The court is expected to hear from additional witnesses and investigators as prosecutors attempt to reconstruct the final hours of Ong’ondo Were and determine who organized the deadly plot.
The proceedings continue under intense public scrutiny with many Kenyans following every revelation surrounding the shocking assassination of the Kasipul legislator in Nairobi.
