Mathira Man Arraigned in Court For Allegedly Killing 8-year-old Niece, Family Speaks

Police are investigating the death of Shantel Waruguru, an 8-year-old girl from Mathira, Nyeri County, who was tragically murdered by her 29-year-old uncle, Peter Njuguna.

According to reports, the deceased went missing under unclear circumstances, and her body was found in a pit latrine near her home, sparking outrage and protests in the community.

The incident has raised concerns about child safety and the need for increased vigilance.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the suspect allegedly lured Shantel's younger sister away with money, leaving Shantel alone before committing the crime.

On March 18, the suspect was taken to court, and his plea was pushed to May 2026.

The community has demanded justice for Shantel, with many expressing their grief and anger on social media.

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi called for the prosecution of the suspect, adding that the case has highlighted the importance of protecting children from violence and ensuring swift justice for victims.

The renowned politician, who spoke during the burial of the deceased, said he was not going to give up until the suspect involved in the murder of the deceased is brought to justice.
