Transport along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway came to a halt today after River Sultan in Hamud overflowed following heavy rains, causing severe traffic congestion.
According to reports, the flooding began on Friday night near Sultan Hamud town after continuous downpours caused the river to burst its banks.
The overflowing river made the highway difficult to navigate, forcing both private vehicles and public service vehicles to slow down or stop entirely.
The Nairobi-Mombasa highway is one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors, mainly used by cargo trucks moving goods from the Port of Mombasa to inland areas.
Motorists reported long queues stretching for several kilometres, with some traffic backed up as far as Emali in Makueni County due to the flooded section near Sultan Hamud.
Authorities have advised drivers to use alternative routes to avoid the affected area.
Motorists are being urged to take the Makindu-Wote-Machakos route until the highway is cleared and safe for travel.
Residents in the affected area have warned that the river remains unpredictable, and heavy rains may worsen the flooding.
Emergency services and local officials are monitoring the situation closely, with some teams deployed to assist stranded motorists and prevent accidents.
Drivers have also been advised to exercise caution, avoid attempting to cross the flooded sections, and stay updated on road conditions through local news and traffic reports.
