The Director of the Criminals Investigations, Mohammed Amin who is set to exit office after four years at the helm of the DCI.
After almost four years at the helm of the Directorate of Criminals Investigations, DCI boss Mohammed Amin's time in office is almost up with President William Ruto set to make major changes to the top command of the National Police Service.
Amin was appointed by Dr Ruto to succeed George Kinoti in 2022 spearhead the DCI in investigating complex criminal cases in the country.
But in 2024, Amin was expected to exit office having hit the mandatory retirement age of 60 years. However, he was offered a two- year contract which is set to expire in April 2026.
Having joined the police service as a cadet in 1989, Amin rose through the ranks to become Kenya's top detective.
Throughout his career, Mr. Amin has spearheaded complex investigations into terrorism, organized crime, illicit financial flows, and transnational threats, including cybercrime, earning him local and international recognition.
Before his appointment as DCI boss, Amin held key positions including Head of Surveillance and Technical Services at Nairobi’s Anti-Corruption Police Unit, Provincial Criminal Investigations Officer (PCIO) in three provinces (2003–2009), and Head of the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit (BFIU).
He also served as Director of the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons as well as Director of the Internal Affair
In his current position, he has led immense operations at the DCI Headquarters including combating human and human organ trafficking, trafficking of narcotics, contraband trade, money laundering, and the protection of women and children.
His crime-fighting approach is characterized by meticulous planning, robust inter-agency collaboration and the modernisation of investigative practices through the adoption of advanced forensic tools and technologies.
A holder of a Masters of Arts degree in Criminology and Security Studies from Egerton University and a Bachelor of Criminology and Security Studies from the same institution, Amin is also an alumnus of the prestigious National Defence College.
