Teargas Drama at Amalemba as Sifuna Rally Sparks Early Morning Chaos

Tension filled the air at Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega after teargas was lobbed at the venue just hours before a major political rally.

The event, organised under the “Linda Mwananchi” banner, was expected to be led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Supporters had already begun gathering at the popular grounds in Kakamega early Saturday morning. Organisers were busy setting up tents, sound systems, and banners in preparation for speeches from key opposition leaders.

But the mood quickly changed when canisters of teargas were reportedly thrown into the area, sending people running in different directions.

Eyewitnesses said the incident happened before the rally officially began. Some claimed that police officers in plain clothes were seen near the venue moments before the teargas was fired.

Videos circulating online showed crowds dispersing as smoke filled the air.

The rally was part of ongoing political mobilisation efforts and was expected to attract several leaders allied to Sifuna.

The event aimed to address issues affecting ordinary citizens, including the rising cost of living and governance concerns.

However, police in the Western region claimed they had not received formal notification about the gathering. According to security officials, they only became aware of the planned rally through social media posts.

Authorities stated that any public assembly must follow legal procedures, including prior notification to ensure safety and order.

The use of teargas at political events has recently sparked national debate. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has previously directed investigations into alleged misuse of teargas during rallies across the country.

Concerns have grown over crowd control methods and the safety of civilians attending political meetings.

Despite the disruption, some supporters remained determined. Small groups regrouped outside the grounds, chanting slogans and waving party flags.

Leaders allied to the rally condemned the incident, accusing authorities of trying to intimidate the opposition.

As political temperatures continue to rise in different parts of the country, events like the one at Amalemba highlight the growing tension between security agencies and political organisers. Whether the rally proceeds peacefully or faces further hurdles remains to be seen.

For now, Amalemba Grounds stand as the latest symbol of Kenya’s charged political climate — where even before speeches begin, drama can erupt.
