“Don’t Tell Mum… I’m in a Hot Zone”: The Final WhatsApp Message from a Baringo Son Lost in War

A quiet village in Baringo County is living with fear and unanswered questions after a young man’s final WhatsApp message from a distant battlefield.

Kevin Njehia, the 25-year-old son of Senior Chief Jacob Njehia, left Kenya in September 2025 full of hope.

According to his family, he believed he was travelling to Russia for a scholarship opportunity that would help him build a better future.

Education, opportunity, and adventure seemed to be waiting for him.

But things did not go as planned.

Soon after arriving, Kevin reportedly found himself connected to military service linked to the ongoing Ukraine war.

What he expected to be a chance to study slowly turned into a nightmare.

In October, his father received a message that would change everything.

“Don’t tell Mum… I am in a hot zone.”

Those chilling words were sent through WhatsApp. They were short, direct, and full of fear. Kevin did not want his mother to panic.

He did not want to worry the family. But the message said enough. He was near active fighting. He was in danger.

A few days later, another message came. He warned that it might be long before they spoke again. After that, silence.

Since October, the family has not heard from him. Reports from other Kenyans believed to have joined the same unit suggest he may have been injured or even killed in December.

However, there has been no official confirmation. No clear answers. No closure.

Back home, Chief Njehia has formally reported his son missing and is appealing to the government for help. The family wants to know the truth.

If Kevin is alive, they want him brought home safely. If he is not, they want his body returned for a proper burial.

This case is not isolated. There are growing concerns that many young Kenyans may have been lured abroad with promises of jobs or education, only to find themselves caught in war.

For the Njehia family, however, the crisis is deeply personal.

Behind the headlines is a mother waiting for a call. A father holding onto hope. A community praying for a miracle.

And echoing in their minds are those haunting words: “I am in a hot zone.”
