Martha Karua Breaks Silence on 2027, Warns She Won't Deputise Anyone in the Presidential Race

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has ruled out the possibility of serving as a running mate in the upcoming 2027 general elections, insisting that her ambitions are solely focused on the presidency.

Speaking on Friday, February 27, 2026, during an interview with a local media outlet, Karua made it clear that she will pursue the top seat independently if she is not nominated as a presidential candidate by a coalition.

“I’m not willing to be someone’s running mate. But in the event that I’m not nominated, I am a presidential aspirant myself.

Ruto is a sitting president; I am a standing president,” Karua stated, reaffirming her commitment to contest for the presidency.

The PLP leader also emphasized her willingness to respect the democratic process and support the chosen candidate should she not secure the presidential ticket.

However, she reiterated that her support would not extend to serving as a deputy.

If I am not selected, I am willing to one hundred per cent support whoever is selected in accordance with the systems we are going to put in place. This means if I miss that position, I will not deputise anyone,” she said.

Karua’s declaration comes amid increasing political speculation about alliances and coalition-building ahead of the 2027 elections.

Several politicians have been reported to be exploring partnerships to strengthen their campaigns, with some analysts suggesting that the coming months will be critical in shaping the presidential race.

The PLP leader’s stance signals her determination to lead her own campaign rather than joining forces as a vice-presidential candidate.

Karua has consistently advocated for transparent and fair electoral processes, warning against malpractice and rigging in past elections.

Her current statements underscore a strategy aimed at consolidating her support base while maintaining political independence.

As the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, Karua’s firm position is expected to influence discussions around coalition negotiations and candidate selection.
