A French court has sentenced two doctors after a billionaire died during a cosmetic surgery meant to enlarge his penis.
The case has shocked many people and raised serious questions about the safety of cosmetic medical procedures.
The man who died was Ehud Arye Laniado, a 65-year-old Belgian-Israeli billionaire known in the diamond business.
He collapsed and died in March 2019 while undergoing a penis enlargement procedure at a private cosmetic clinic in Paris. The treatment involved injections that were supposed to increase the size of his manhood.
According to court findings, Laniado suffered a heart attack during the procedure. While the injection itself was not confirmed as the direct cause of death, the court ruled that the doctors made serious mistakes in how they handled the emergency.
Witnesses said the doctors did not react quickly enough when the patient showed signs of distress and delayed calling emergency services.
The main doctor in charge was given a 15-month suspended prison sentence and fined €50,000. His assistant received a 12-month suspended sentence and a €20,000 fine. Both doctors have also been permanently banned from practicing medicine in France.
The assistant doctor was found to be illegally practicing, as he was not properly registered with the French Medical Association.
This was one of several violations highlighted during the trial. Prosecutors also pointed out failures in patient care and clinic safety standards.
Initially, the doctors were investigated for manslaughter. However, the charges were later reduced to offenses including failure to assist a person in danger and medical law violations.
The court said the doctors had a clear duty to act faster and more responsibly when the patient’s condition became critical.
Laniado was reported to have undergone similar cosmetic treatments in the past and was willing to pay large amounts of money for them. His death has sparked debate about whether cosmetic procedures, especially intimate ones, are worth the risk
Medical experts say that cosmetic surgeries are not risk-free, particularly for older patients or when done outside fully equipped hospitals. They warn that procedures marketed as simple or harmless can still lead to serious complications.
This tragic case serves as a warning about the dangers of cosmetic medical treatments and the importance of strict medical standards and patient safety
