Tragic Gold Mine Collapse in Turkwel, West Pokot Leaves One Dead, Woman Rescued

A tragic accident occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at a gold mining site in Turkwel, West Pokot County, when a section of a makeshift mine shaft collapsed.

The collapse trapped a married couple who had gone into the pit early in the morning to search for gold. Sadly, the husband lost his life, while his wife was rescued in critical condition and rushed to Kapenguria Referral Hospital for treatment.

The incident took place in one of the many informal gold mining areas in Turkwel, where miners often work under dangerous and unsafe conditions.

According to eyewitnesses, the couple had entered the deep pit when the walls of the shaft, which were unstable and poorly supported, caved in, burying them under soil and rocks.

Local miners and residents were quick to respond, starting a rescue operation using whatever tools they could find. Their efforts continued for several hours as they tried to reach the trapped couple. “It is unfortunate that we lost one miner in the incident. His wife was rescued alive and taken to hospital.

We are grateful to the rescue team and members of the public who acted quickly,” said Wycliffe Munanda, the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) of West Pokot.

The woman was eventually pulled from the rubble alive but in a weak state, highlighting both the danger of the collapse and the determination of the rescuers. The husband, however, could not be saved, and his body was taken to Kapenguria County Referral Hospital mortuary.

This tragedy has once again raised concerns about the conditions under which small-scale gold miners operate in West Pokot and other parts of Kenya. Most of these mining activities are informal and lack proper safety regulations, exposing workers to frequent accidents and even deaths.

Makeshift mining pits, like the one in Turkwel, are often dug without adequate support or protective measures, putting miners at constant risk.

Local leaders and community members have long called for government intervention to regulate artisanal mining and ensure the safety of miners. Such measures could include proper training, the use of safe mining equipment, and regular inspections to prevent similar tragedies.

Police have launched investigations into the Turkwel incident to understand what caused the collapse and to determine whether safety regulations were ignored. The results of the investigation may help prevent future accidents in the region.

Mining is a key source of income for many families in West Pokot. However, incidents like this underline the urgent need for a balance between economic activity and safety measures. Families who depend on mining for their livelihood often face difficult choices, working in hazardous conditions to earn a living.

While artisanal mining contributes to the local economy, it can be deadly if proper safety precautions are not followed.

The West Pokot community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and has shown appreciation for those who helped rescue the surviving miner.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with informal mining and the importance of community cooperation during emergencies.

As mining activities continue in Turkwel and across West Pokot, the government and local authorities are urged to take stronger action to regulate mining operations, enforce safety standards, and provide support for miners and their families. Doing so could help prevent similar tragedies and make artisanal mining safer for everyone involved.

The rescue of the woman, though in critical condition, is a small relief in the midst of this tragedy. It shows that with quick action and community effort, lives can be saved even in dangerous situations.

The Turkwel gold mine collapse is a somber reminder that while mining can bring economic opportunities, it must be approached with caution, proper equipment, and safety regulations to protect those who risk their lives every day to make a living.
