Police have arrested three men suspected of being part of a criminal gang that has been terrorizing truck drivers along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The suspects, identified as Juma Ali, Hamisi Juma, and Benedict Chirodo, were apprehended near Bonje in Mazeras Township.
Authorities say the arrests are part of ongoing efforts to improve safety on one of Kenya’s busiest highways.
According to the police, the three men are believed to belong to a larger criminal network that has been targeting truck drivers for months.
The group reportedly operates along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, which is a key transport route connecting Kenya’s capital to its largest port city.
Truck drivers in the area have long complained about attacks and robberies, which have caused fear and disrupted the transportation of goods.
The police said the operation to arrest the suspects involved careful planning and intelligence gathering. While details about how the suspects were caught have not been fully disclosed, authorities confirmed that the arrest was successful and the men are now in police custody, facing criminal charges.
“The arrest of these three individuals is a significant step toward curbing highway robberies along this corridor,” said a police spokesperson. “We are committed to ensuring that truck drivers and other road users can travel safely without fear of attack.”
Residents of Mazeras Township and nearby areas welcomed the arrests, saying that highway robberies have been a growing concern for years.
Many locals reported that gangs often target drivers at night or in isolated areas, taking advantage of poor lighting and limited security presence. The arrests are seen as a positive sign that law enforcement is taking the problem seriously.
Truck drivers, who are frequently on the move transporting goods across the country, said they are relieved by the arrests but stressed the need for continued vigilance.
“We hope this will make the highway safer for everyone,” said one driver, who requested not to be named. “We still need more police patrols and security measures, especially in areas that are known to be dangerous.”
Highway robbery is not a new problem in Kenya, but authorities say the recent spate of attacks along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway has been particularly alarming.
Criminal groups often use violence and intimidation to steal cargo, which can include everything from construction materials to commercial goods. Such crimes not only put drivers at risk but also affect businesses that rely on timely delivery of products.
Police have urged members of the public and truck drivers to remain alert and report any suspicious activity along the highway.
They also warned that anyone found participating in highway robberies will face serious legal consequences. “Our goal is to dismantle criminal networks and restore safety along major transport routes,” the spokesperson added.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to identify other members of the gang and prevent further attacks.
The arrests of Juma Ali, Hamisi Juma, and Benedict Chirodo serve as a reminder of the risks that exist on busy highways, but also highlight the efforts by law enforcement to combat crime and protect citizens.
For now, the suspects remain in police custody, and more updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
Truck drivers and locals alike are hoping that the arrests will mark the beginning of a safer period along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
