Teargas at Church Service Attended by Rigathi Gachagua Sparks Political Tension in Nyeri

Chaos broke out on Sunday at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, after police lobbed teargas during a church service attended by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua.

The incident caused panic among worshippers and led to the vandalism of several vehicles parked near the church.

According to early reports, the service was ongoing when police officers moved in and fired teargas canisters, forcing congregants to flee for safety.

Videos and images circulating online showed people running from the church compound, coughing and shielding their faces from the gas. Some vehicles were damaged during the confusion as crowds scrambled to escape the area.

The presence of Rigathi Gachagua at the service has given the incident a strong political angle. Gachagua, a former Deputy President, is now a leading opposition figure and heads the DCP party, which he launched after his impeachment in 2024.

Since then, he has remained active in national politics, especially in the Mount Kenya region, where he commands significant support.

The use of teargas at or near a church has sparked public anger and debate. Many Kenyans view churches as neutral and sacred spaces, and police action in such settings is often seen as excessive.

Human rights advocates and political observers have raised concerns about freedom of worship and the conduct of security agencies during public gatherings involving opposition leaders.

So far, authorities have not issued a detailed explanation on what prompted the police response or whether the teargas was deployed inside the church compound or nearby.

It also remains unclear if the service had turned into a political meeting or if there were security threats that led to the police action.

Supporters of Gachagua have accused the government of using security forces to intimidate opposition leaders and disrupt their activities.

The government has previously denied such claims, insisting that police operations are carried out to maintain law and order.

As the country awaits official statements from the police and church leaders, the Witima incident is expected to fuel wider discussions on policing, political tolerance, and respect for religious spaces.

With the 2027 general election slowly approaching, incidents like this highlight the growing political tension and deep divisions within the country.
