Ugandan Police Officers Arrested After Secret Night Burial of Congolese Suspect in Custody

Three police officers and two civilians have been arrested in Uganda after allegedly secretly burying a Congolese suspect who died while in police custody, according to official statements and local media reports.

According to Uganda Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the suspect died while being held at a police station in western Uganda under circumstances that are now under investigation. Authorities said the officers involved failed to follow official procedures after the death occurred.

ASP Maate said the suspects included two police constables, a corporal, and two civilians. He stated that instead of informing the District Police Commander and relevant authorities, the group allegedly transported and buried the body secretly during the night.

Official statements indicate that the officers also allegedly misled the deceased man’s relatives when they came looking for him. According to police, the family was reportedly told that the suspect had already been released from custody.

The identity of the deceased Congolese national and the exact cause of death had not been publicly disclosed by the time of publication.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing to establish how the suspect died and whether criminal charges related to the death itself will be filed.

According to reports, the arrests were made after senior police officials discovered irregularities surrounding the suspect’s disappearance and burial. Investigators are now examining possible violations of police procedure, abuse of office, concealment of evidence, and other potential criminal offenses.

The incident has renewed public scrutiny over deaths occurring in police custody in Uganda. Human rights organizations have previously called for greater transparency and accountability in such cases, especially where detainees die before appearing in court.

Police authorities said the detained officers and civilians remain in custody pending further investigations. Officials have not yet announced when the suspects will appear in court.
