A 22-year-old final-year law student has died under disturbing circumstances following a night out that reportedly ended in a violent confrontation with her boyfriend in Mukono, Uganda.
According to court proceedings at the Mukono Chief Magistrate’s Court, the suspect, a 25-year-old man, has been charged with murder and remanded to Luzira Prison as investigations continue.
Prosecutors allege that the incident occurred after the couple spent an evening at a bar in Mukono on April 8.
Authorities claim tensions escalated when the student, identified as Bridget Arikiriza, declined to spend the night at the suspect’s home.
He is then alleged to have forced her into a vehicle before later presenting conflicting accounts of what had happened, initially claiming she had been involved in a road accident.
Police say the woman was later rushed to a hospital in Mukono, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. However, investigators noted inconsistencies in the suspect’s explanation, prompting deeper scrutiny into the circumstances surrounding her death.
A spokesperson from the Kampala Metropolitan Police stated that preliminary findings suggest the victim sustained injuries before reaching the hospital, raising suspicions about the suspect’s version of events.
The suspect was formally charged at the court and remanded as detectives continue to gather evidence to establish what transpired during the critical hours after the night out.
The tragic incident has shocked students at Uganda Christian University, where the victim was pursuing her law degree, and has sparked renewed concerns about safety in intimate relationships among young people.
Investigations remain ongoing as the family and the public await further clarity on the case.
