"Ndio Hawa" Photo of Two Kids Who Died After Mother Locked Them in House with Jiko

Two siblings, aged six and seven, were found dead in their Zambezi home, Kiambu County, on May 12, 2026. Police suspect carbon monoxide poisoning after their mother allegedly locked them inside with a burning jiko.

Kiambu Police boss David Kimwele confirmed the incident. Officers responded to a distress call at 8:15 AM. They broke into the house and discovered the children unconscious beside a lit charcoal jiko.

Post-mortem exams at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital are pending. Initial findings point to suffocation from fumes. No signs of physical injury appeared on the bodies.

The mother, whose identity police withheld, had left the house earlier. Neighbors said she locked the door and took the house key. She returned after the discovery and is now in custody.

Ruaka Police Station launched a murder investigation. "We are probing negligence or intent," Kimwele stated. Detectives visited the scene, collecting the jiko and air samples.

“This is a very painful incident. If she had disagreements with her husband, she should have left the children alone and returned to her parents,” said Munyua, a resident.
