Man Arrested While Visiting Friends in Cell Released After Two Decades

A family in Kakamega County is celebrating after their relative, Pius Lumumba, was released from prison after serving a 20-year jail term.

The 60-year-old man from Lubao village said he was arrested in 2005 while visiting friends who had been detained at a police station over a murder case.

Lumumba claimed he was innocent and had only gone to check on his friends when police officers suddenly arrested him.

Speaking after his release from Kakamega GK Main Prison, he said his freedom was taken away from that day until his release. He explained that his case dragged on in court for years before it was finally concluded in 2016.

After a change in his sentence, Lumumba was transferred from Kisumu Prison to Naivasha Maximum Prison. While in prison, he met another inmate who encouraged him to remain hopeful and trust in God despite the challenges he faced.

Lumumba said the experience taught him a hard lesson about being careful with the company he keeps and warned Kenyans against getting involved with people who may bring trouble into their lives.

Family members, including his wife and children, gathered outside the prison to welcome him home after two decades behind bars.

Lumumba said he left home when his younger sibling was only 12 years old and returned when he was already 32. Kakamega Main Prison Commissioner David Serei urged the community to accept Lumumba back into society, saying he had undergone several rehabilitation programmes to help him become a better person.
