“He Said He’d Be Back Soon”: DJ Denno’s Wife Recalls Painful Last Moments Before His Death

A cloud of grief has covered Luanda, Vihiga County, after popular disc jockey Dennis Omondi, widely known as DJ Denno, was allegedly shot dead during clashes involving police and boda boda riders.

According to reports, the unrest broke out after boda boda operators protested along the Luanda–Kisumu Road, lighting bonfires and blocking the highway.

Police officers reportedly responded by firing teargas and live bullets to disperse the crowd. It was during the chaos that DJ Denno lost his life.

Speaking through tears, his wife, Wendy Ateka, shared the heartbreaking conversation they had moments before he left home.

“Aliniambia hafiki mbali, anarudi,” she painfully recalled, explaining that her husband had only stepped out to buy food for the family.

Wendy said Denno was wearing casual clothes and Crocs when he left, promising to return shortly with breakfast. She never imagined it would be the last time seeing him alive.

"He told me he was just going to the nearby shops and would come back immediately,” she said in an emotional interview.

The young DJ is survived by Wendy and their infant child, whose photos have touched many Kenyans online. Friends, fans, and fellow entertainers have continued to mourn him on social media, describing him as humble, kind-hearted, and hardworking.

His death has also sparked fresh concerns over police brutality and the safety of innocent civilians during protests and public unrest. Many online users have called for investigations into the shooting and demanded justice for the late entertainer.

As tributes continue to pour in, Wendy’s emotional words have left many Kenyans heartbroken, with social media users sympathising with the young family left behind after the sudden tragedy.
