A 22-year-old law student has died in a case that is now under murder investigation following an alleged disagreement with her boyfriend over where she would spend the night after an evening out.
According to police reports and court records, a 25-year-old suspect has been remanded to Luzira Prison after being charged with the murder of Bridget Arikiriza, a final-year law student at Uganda Christian University.
Court documents indicate that the couple spent the evening of April 8 at a bar in Mukono town. Investigators allege that tension developed later in the night after Arikiriza reportedly declined to accompany her boyfriend to his residence.
Prosecutors claim the suspect became upset and allegedly forced the student into his Toyota Premio vehicle. He later contacted a worker at the bar and reportedly stated that the victim had been involved in a road accident along Katosi Road.
Authorities further allege that the victim was later moved into another vehicle, a Toyota Mark X, where several acquaintances reportedly joined them before she was rushed to Mukono Church of Uganda Hospital. Medical personnel pronounced her dead on arrival.
Police investigations reportedly raised questions about the suspect’s version of events. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Recheal Kawala stated that preliminary findings suggested the victim had suffered injuries before reaching the hospital, contradicting the earlier explanation that she had been involved in a road accident.
The suspect was later arrested and presented before court, where he was remanded as detectives continue gathering evidence surrounding the incident.
The case has generated widespread public attention in Uganda, especially as it follows other recent incidents involving students from Uganda Christian University that have attracted national discussion.
Authorities say investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the student’s death.
