A Grade 8 pupil has been forced to assume adult responsibilities and care for his siblings amid difficult living conditions that have kept him out of school since January.
The boy, Tito, is a learner at a school in Kitui County. However, his education has been disrupted as he stays at home to support his family, which includes four younger siblings.
According to available information, Tito’s mother has been struggling with illness and is often away seeking help, leaving him to take charge of the household.
Reports further indicate that his father left shortly after his birth, leaving him as the eldest child in the family.
Despite his young age, Tito has taken on the role of caretaker. He reportedly engages in small jobs such as selling water, collecting and selling plastic waste, and trading household items to try and provide food for his siblings.
On some days when food is unavailable, he is said to prepare simple meals using boiled water mixed with salt just to keep the children going. The family also reportedly sleeps on the floor due to a lack of basic bedding.
The situation has left Tito bearing responsibilities far beyond his age, as he struggles to keep his family afloat while longing to return to school.
He is now appealing to well-wishers for assistance, hoping to resume his education and secure a better future for himself and his siblings through learning.
