Elvis Opiyo, a National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer, accused of orchestrating an acid attack on his ex-girlfriend, Mary Claire, a gospel singer, on March 17, 2026, near Prestige Plaza on Ngong Road, has pleaded not guilty.
According to reports, the attack left Claire with severe injuries, including potential vision loss in one eye.
It is alleged that Opiyo, who is married with two children, had been in an eight-year relationship with Claire and had allegedly been paying her school fees, but she reportedly ended the affair due to his refusal to leave his wife.
He allegedly orchestrated an attack that left the victim hospitalized at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to speak on the case, orchestrated Opiyo's arrest, tricking him into returning to Nairobi.
Opiyo is currently in custody, facing charges of attempted murder and previous assault. Investigations reveal he had previously attacked Claire in November 2025; the victim reported him to the police, but no action was taken.
The incident has sparked outrage, with calls for justice and condemnation from the church and public figures.
Opiyo's employer, the NIS, has not publicly commented on the matter.
