Matiang'i Shares Deeply Troubling Message Online Shortly After Rally Disruption

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has strongly condemned the disruption of a political rally held in Kikuyu on Saturday afternoon, terming the incident a threat to democracy and public participation.

The rally, which brought together key opposition figures including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was cut short after chaos erupted, preventing supporters from engaging with leaders as planned.

In a statement shared after the incident, Matiang’i described the events as deeply troubling. He said wananchi who had gathered peacefully and in good faith were denied their democratic right to be heard.

“This afternoon in Kikuyu, a deeply troubling incident unfolded that strikes at the heart of our democratic values,” he said.

He stressed that no democracy can thrive where citizens are silenced through force, adding that the disruption raised serious concerns about political tolerance in the country.

Despite the chaos, Matiang’i assured the public that all principals affiliated with the United Alternative Government coalition were safe.

He noted that the leaders had since regrouped to reflect on what had happened and to chart the way forward.

He further stated that the team unanimously condemned what he termed as an act of repression aimed at intimidating both leaders and their supporters.

The former CS maintained that the incident would not weaken their resolve. Instead, he said it had strengthened their commitment to push for reforms and defend the rights of Kenyans.

“We will not be deterred. The struggle to restore dignity, freedom, and accountable leadership in our country continues,” he added.

The disruption in Kikuyu has sparked debate over the state of political freedoms, with observers warning that such incidents could undermine democratic space if not addressed.

Even so, Matiang’i and his allies insist they will continue engaging citizens across the country as part of their broader agenda.

He concluded his message with a rallying call, urging supporters to remain steadfast and united under their movement’s slogan, “Let’s Fix It.”
