"I Watched My Six Children Fast To Death" Mother In The Shakahola Ordeal Testifies In Court

The Shakahola forest incident was uncovered in 2023 in Kilifi County where authorities discovered mass graves linked to a religious sect led by Paul Nthenge Mackenzie.

Investigations revealed that followers were allegedly encouraged to fast to death in order to “meet Jesus,” leading to the deaths of hundreds of people many of them being children.

Among the affected people was Ann onyoso who confessed to letting her children starve to death but she was later charged with orchestrating death. She was among the many accused people in the shakahola massacre.

During a defense hearing held at Mombasa High courts before justice Diana Mochache on April ,23, 2026,Ann Onyoso told the court that she watched her six children starve to death. She added that the children chose to fast on their own volition in a bid to “meet Jesus.”

Speaking during ongoing hearings, Onyoso said her children had embraced the teachings they were exposed to and willingly participated in the fasting.

Prosecutors however challenged this account arguing that the environment in Shakahola was one of intense indoctrination and control.

They maintained that many followers may not have been acting entirely out of free will given the strict doctrines and isolation reportedly enforced within the group.

The court has continued to hear testimonies describing a disturbing pattern inside the compound, including prolonged fasting, restricted movement and secret burials of victims. Survivors have painted a picture of a community deeply entrenched in extreme religious teachings.

The trial involving Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and his co-accused is still ongoing.as the justice system works to establish accountability for the hundreds of lives lost.
