Kenyans have taken to social media to express mixed reactions after a new retail chain, Jaza Supermarket, reportedly opened six branches across different locations within a single day.
The move has surprised many, especially at a time when several businesses in the country are said to be struggling.
According to reports, Jaza made history by becoming one of the first supermarkets in Kenya to launch six outlets simultaneously in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
The branches were opened in locations such as Kiambu Road, Thindigua, Madaraka, Utawala, Bahati, and Manyanja Road, targeting residential areas with high demand for affordable goods.
The supermarket chain, which was launched in 2023, has been expanding rapidly and now has over 20 branches. Industry reports indicate that the company focuses on offering low-priced products and positioning its stores close to customers for convenience.
However, the bold expansion has sparked debate online. Some Kenyans have praised the move, saying it shows confidence in the economy and creates job opportunities for many young people.
Others have questioned how a new business can grow so fast while many established companies are closing or downsizing.
A section of social media users pointed out that Kenya’s retail sector has faced challenges in the past, with some supermarkets collapsing due to debts and mismanagement.
Despite this, analysts say new players like Jaza are using different strategies, including smaller neighborhood stores and cheaper pricing, to attract customers.
