HAPPENING NOW: Traffic Comes to a Standstill Along Matuu–Mwingi Highway After River Kavain Overflows

Transport along the Matuu Mwingi highway has come to a complete stop after River Kavaini in Mwingi overflowed following prolonged heavy rains.

The flooding has blocked a key section of the road, leading to major disruption for road users.

The situation started on Tuesday night near Kavaini Bridge after continuous rainfall caused water levels to rise sharply, eventually spilling over the riverbanks and onto the road.

The floodwaters fully submerged the bridge, making it unusable and unsafe for travel.

Due to the flooding, traffic movement has been heavily affected.

Private vehicles and public transport operators have been forced to reduce speed drastically or halt completely as they approach the submerged section.

The Matuu Mwingi highway is an important transport route and is widely used by cargo trucks ferrying goods between Mwingi and Nairobi.

Its closure has therefore resulted in significant delays in the movement of goods and passengers.

Motorists have reported extensive traffic buildup stretching several kilometres, with some congestion reportedly reaching back to Mwingi Town in Kitui County.

Many drivers remain stranded, waiting for water levels to drop before they can continue their journeys.

Authorities are yet to issue an official update on the incident as motorists continue to wait at the affected stretch of road.

Local residents have raised concern, noting that the river is highly volatile during the rainy season and further rainfall could intensify the flooding situation.

Emergency response teams and local officials are closely observing the situation and have been deployed to assist stranded drivers and reduce the risk of accidents in the affected area.

Drivers have been advised to avoid attempting to cross the flooded section, remain cautious, and stay informed through local news and traffic updates as conditions continue to develop.
