Dramatic Scenes as Haitians Block Kenyan Police Exit Over Gang Violence Fears

A dramatic situation has unfolded in Haiti after local residents took to the streets to protest the planned withdrawal of Kenya Police Service officers serving under an international peace mission.

According to recent reports, Haitian civilians blocked roads and stopped Kenyan police from leaving some areas, including St. Marks and Pont Sonde.

Protesters used barricades to prevent movement, forcing security teams to use helicopters to evacuate some officers.

The protests highlight growing fear among locals, who worry that the exit of Kenyan officers will expose them to increased gang violence.

Haiti has been facing a serious security crisis, with armed gangs controlling large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other regions.

The Kenyan officers were deployed in 2024 under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, which was backed by the United Nations.

Their role was to help the Haitian National Police fight gangs and restore order. Over time, they became a key force in stabilizing some areas, even though challenges remained.

Now, the mission is coming to an end, with a new force known as the Gang Suppression Force expected to take over security operations.

This new team will include officers from other countries, such as Chad, and is expected to have a stronger mandate.

Despite this transition, many Haitians are not convinced that the new force will offer the same level of protection. Some residents say the presence of Kenyan police gave them hope and safety, and their departure creates uncertainty.

The protests have therefore turned into emotional scenes, with some people pleading for the Kenyan officers to stay, while others express mixed reactions about foreign involvement in their country.
