According to available sources of news, tension has flared at ODM press briefing in Nairobiz clearly demonstrating the atmosphere within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
What was supposed to be a standard post-meeting update has turned into a fiery confrontation as National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo abruptly shut down a journalist’s inquiry into the party’s internal fractures.
The drama has unfolded shortly after the party’s Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting, chaired by the newly installed Party Leader Sen. Dr. Oburu Odinga.
A journalist has sought clarity on a glaring absence of prominent figures like Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino skipped such a pivotal gathering.
The reaction however has been immediate and sharp. Rather than offering a diplomatic explanation, Junet and Millie have visibly bristled at the mention of the duo.
The exchange has highlighted the growing sensitivity surrounding Sifuna’s recent suspension as Secretary General, a decision the PG officially ratified during the session.
The PG meeting has been a a high-stakes affair that has seen the party formalize several major shifts like ffirming Oburu Odinga as the new Party Leader.
Formally endorsing the suspension of Edwin Sifuna and packing the "Broad-based Government" arrangement with UDA.
The PG has also stamped a special NDC meeting next month to deal with leadership changes.
The raw emotion displayed at the podium suggests that while the party leadership is projecting a united front on paper, the internal reality is far more complex.
By refusing to engage with questions about the missing lawmakers, the party leadership has signaled that they are currently prioritizing discipline and loyalty over public debate.
ODM is in the midst of a significant identity shift, and the leadership is clearly in no mood for distractions from the rank and file or the party.
